There is a true need in Ontario’s health care system for non-urgent medical transportation.  In rural Northern Ontario there are very few options available for patients in need of medical transportation.  In collaboration with the Espanola Regional Hospital and the Manitoulin Health Centre, the Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board operates a non-urgent patient transportation service that offers this very important service to our communities.

The Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board seeks highly motivated, responsible, well-organized and competent team players with good interpersonal communication skills to perform the role of Personal Support Worker for our Non-Urgent Patient Transportation Service in a unionized environment.  

Essential Functions & Basic Duties:  The Personal Support Worker will actively participate in the needs of non-ambulatory patients while providing safe transportation to and from medical and/or Long-Term Care facilities. Being responsible for all aspect’s patient care during transportation the PSW will operate multiple mobility devices (power load stretcher, stretcher, stair-chair, and other mobility devices to assist in the movement of patients). The PSW will monitor patients and provide basic care interventions should the need arise during transport to and from sending/receiving facilities in ambulance type vehicles.  The PSW will also be responsible to document all pertinent information as related to the patient transfer, and other dealings through the course of their day in order assess the effectiveness of this service.

Terms of Employment: The successful candidate, upon hiring, will receive the necessary training and orientation required to perform duties.  The funding model allows for 2 transfer units to be made available for use from Monday to Friday for 8 hours each day (Actual start times and hours of service vary daily and the potential for evening/weekend service will be required).  

Qualifications: 

  • Valid Personal Support Worker College Certificate
  • “G” driver’s license 
  • Current driver’s license abstracts with no demerit points or loss of license in the previous three years.
  • Current criminal records check (vulnerable sector)
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR level “C” with AED
  • Proof of vaccinations or lab test if applicable

        Hepatitis B
        Mumps
        Influenza
        Pertussis (Adult Dose)
        Fully Vaccinated for COVID-19 + first booster (third dose)

  • Free of communicable disease
  • Physically able to perform two person lifts and transfers, in a safe, smooth controlled manner, of patients utilizing appropriate patient lifting equipment and techniques
  • Knowledge of technological systems including computers, tablets, fax machines, internet, and email
  • Understanding of basic word processing software (Microsoft Word)
  • Bilingualism English/French is considered an asset

Location: Little Current 

Salary: $21.61 per hour in accordance with the pay scale as determined by the collective agreement with OPSEU 679
