There is a true need in Ontario’s health care system for medical transportation. In rural Northern Ontario there are very few options available for patients in need of medical transportation. It is with this in mind that the North East Local Health Integration Network (NELHIN) has chosen a partnership of Manitoulin-Sudbury DSB, Espanola Regional Hospital & Health Care Centre, and Manitoulin Health Centre to participate in an innovative trial project surrounding this issue.
The Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board seeks a highly motivated, responsible, well-organized and competent team player with good interpersonal communication skills to perform the role of Patient Transportation Attendant.
Essential Functions & Basic Duties: The Patient Transportation Attendant (PTA) will actively participate in the mobility needs of patients while providing non-urgent transportation to in-patients of medical facilities. The majority of patient transportation will be from one medical facility to another. Being responsible for all aspects of transportation the PTA will operate a stretcher capable transport vehicle and multiple mobility devices (stretcher, stair-chair, and other mobility devices to assist in the movement of patients), utilizing a variety of travel routes in order to timely, efficiently and safely arrive at pick up locations and destinations. The PTA will assist medical escorts during the course of the transfer where applicable, monitor patients and provide basic emergency care interventions should the need arise while awaiting the response of an ambulance. The PTA will also be responsible to document all pertinent information as related to the patient transfer, and other dealings through the course of their day in order assess the effectiveness of this service.
Terms of Employment: The successful candidate, upon hiring, will receive the necessary training and orientation. Hours of service vary daily and includes days, evenings and weekends will be required.
Qualifications:
- G driver’s license
- Current driver’s license abstract with no demerit points or loss of license in the previous three years.
- Current criminal records check (vulnerable sector)
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR level “C” (advanced certifications preferred)
- Proof of vaccinations or lab test if applicable

Fully Vaccinated for COVID-19 + first booster (third dose)
- Free of communicable disease
- Perform two person lifts and transfers, in a safe, smooth controlled manner, of patients weighing up to 95 kilograms (210 pounds) utilizing appropriate patient lifting equipment
- Knowledge of technological systems including: computers, tablets, fax machines, internet, and email
- Understanding of basic word processing software (Microsoft Word)
- Education and/or experience in a Health Care Field will be considered an asset. (PSW preferred)
- Bilingualism English/French is considered an asset
Location: Little Current
Salary: $18.01 per hour in accordance with the pay scale as determined by the collective agreement with OPSEU 679
