A partnership between the Island hospitals, Espanola Regional Hospital and the local services board will assist with transportation needs.

DSAB CAO Fern Dominelli says the Ontario government has approved annual base funding up to $300,000 for the Patient Transfer Service to support non ambulance transportation for medically stable patients.

He says the partnership began as a pilot project in March 2013 and last year, the partners signed a three-year agreement, which will provide a PSW and attendant in each vehicle.

Dominelli adds the service will use decommissioned ambulances to provide the service.

He says it is great news for patients who need to travel to Sudbury for diagnostic testing.
